The Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Uganda (SDMU) project is co-financed by the European Union (EU) and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is implemented by GIZ in collaboration with Uganda"s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) and its Departments of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM). The project aims to enhance the business environment and attractiveness of Uganda's mining sector to support socio-economic development and align with the EU"s Global Gateway strategy, particularly the Critical Raw Materials Act. It focuses on five key outputs: 1) Investment promotion, 2) ASM formalization, 3) Mineral value addition and processing, 4) Strengthening oversight, and 5) Responsible sourcing. DGSM through the support of the SDMU project is developing a National Minerals Database (NMDB) to enhance management of mining sector and ensure compliance with the Mining and Minerals Act 2022 and subsidiary regulations such as Mining and Minerals (Licensing) Regulations 2023 and ICGLR Regulations 2023, following the GovStack approach. The implementation of the NMDB will enhance oversight, transparency, and regulatory compliance within the mining sector. The NMDB is an electronic registry for mineral rights information, geoscientific data, traceability data and is also an integrated, secure digital platform managing the entire mineral lifecycle from licensing to export. The digitalisation of DGSM processes is important for improving revenue collection, attracting responsible investment, and ensuring that the exploitation of mineral resources contributes towards social and economic development of Uganda.
